10 Mar What’s My Purpose?
Do you feel connected to a purpose (some may reference it as a calling), professionally, personally?
Being dialed into our purpose gives life greater meaning, but it also helps to maintain motivation (especially when faced with obstacles and challenges) in our work and lives.
“Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose.” – Victor Frankl
A new client recently shared that he was unsure of his purpose and felt like he had been “going through the motions” in his professional life. I know many individuals feel the same way, BUT settling serves no one!
If you are unsure about your purpose (I promise it is inside of you), start asking yourself questions.
- What are you passionate about (it can be many things)?
- What do you enjoy doing?
- What makes you happy?
- What are you good at (natural skills and abilities are often taken for granted)?
- How do you want to be remembered?
Cultivating the connection to your purpose also enables you to live a more intentional life. Being intentional with your thoughts and actions helps to maintain focus, giving you a clearer path to achieving goals (even if you don’t know every step of the way initially).
I was speaking before a group of individuals who wanted to reinvent their lives professionally and I asked, “What do you enjoy doing?” One participant said, “It never dawned on me that I could actually do something I really enjoy for a living.” She was caught up in how could I possibly do this(sound familiar?) and took herself out of the game because she didn’t know every single step before starting.
“He who has a why to live, can bear almost any how.” – Nietzsche
How would you answer the question, “What’s My Purpose?” And please don’t let others rent space in your head when pondering your response. In fact, I’ll add to the list of questions above.
What do you think about in your secret thoughts?
Give yourself the gift of being open to possibilities!
Is there something that has been crossing your mind, but you haven’t really given it credence? If you can imagine it in your mind’s eye, it’s worth examining. Those thoughts are there for a reason.
You deserve to live a purposeful life.
“It’s not enough to have lived, we should be determined to live for something.
Winston Churchill
